In the shadowy corners of Doaden, the Tormentor Cults rise, a gathering of the
deranged and the damned, united in their worship of a cruel intelligence from
beyond our reality, a terrible being that feeds upon anguish and suffering.
Like their dark lord, the Tormentor Cults revel in pain and despair. Their rituals,
steeped in madness and brutality, harness raw anguish to summon forth
abominable entities from the Prison Realm - entities too dreadful for mortal
minds to conceive. Among them are strange collector entities and machines of
torment that stalk a twisted landscape echoing with the chorus of countless
wailing souls collected from countless worlds. In this macabre domain, fear
reigns supreme and mercy is but a forgotten word.
While many of the terrors of Doaden batter upon the walls of civilization from without, the Tormentor Cults are an altogether more insidious threat, rising from the very heart of the realm. The whispers of the Jailer bleed into our reality, taking root in the minds of the desperate, the oppressed, and the insane - fertile ground indeed in these desperate times.
Their creed preaches the glorification of suffering as a pathway to enlightenment and power. They believe that through inflicting torment upon others or enduring it themselves, they can commune with their malevolent deity and achieve transcendence. Such beliefs are reinforced through a twisted interpretation of ancient texts and prophecies, propagated by charismatic leaders who exploit the vulnerabilities of the dispossessed and disillusioned.
The dark will that lies behind the Tormentor Cults is not of this material realm, their strange magics and corrupting influences is drawn from a place beyond our own. This place is known as the Prison Realm.
A malevolent, sentient force suffuses this place, driven by an instinctive hunger. This force is known and worshipped as the Prison Lord, and it is this intelligence that impels Tormentor Cultists to enact their dark rituals. Driving them to construct great Hecatombs and cast ever more souls into the Prison Realm, thereby feeding and sustaining their ominous master.
