BACKGROUND

The Faded are hollowed-out souls, people who have endured such profound suffering, grief, fear or despair that something essential within them has withered away. They wander the world in a state somewhere between life and death, stripped of ambition, identity and purpose.

Emaciated and often unclothed, the Faded drift through ruins, roadsides, prisons and forgotten corners of civilisation. They rarely speak. Many seem barely aware of their surroundings, whilst others wander endlessly without destination or apparent need for comfort.

Most were once ordinary people. Survivors of war, famine and massacre. Prisoners. Victims of monsters, cults and cruelties too terrible to name. Whatever their origins, they are united by a common tragedy: they have lost the ability to imagine a future for themselves.

The Faded provoke a deep and instinctive discomfort in all who encounter them. Even animals behave strangely around them, shying away as though sensing something profoundly wrong. Though often encountered alone, they sometimes gather into silent processions, regarded throughout Doaden as ill omens, for wherever the Faded gather, fear, unrest and despair soon follow.
