BACKGROUND

At the heart of the Tormentor Cults lies a mystery that even their most devoted adherents struggle to comprehend. The entity known as the Jailer is neither a god, nor a demon, nor a mortal creature elevated to impossible heights. It is something stranger.

Since the Cataclysm, the suffering of prisoners, tyrants, warlords and the desperate has left lasting impressions upon the world. Whether the Jailer began as a spirit, a parasite, a fragment of some greater intelligence or merely an idea that learned to survive is unknown. What is known is that it feeds upon suffering, despair, obsession and the belief that pain possesses meaning.

Across the centuries, whispers have come to prisoners, outcasts and the broken, offering comfort, understanding and revelation. The Tormentor Cults are merely the most infamous expression of a phenomenon far older than the cults themselves. Though they do not worship the Jailer directly, every rite, sacrifice and act of cruelty strengthens the cycle from which it feeds.

On exceedingly rare occasions, the Jailer assumes physical form: a towering giant of flesh and iron whose swollen body is a living prison, sustained by the suffering of those trapped within. To witness the Jailer is to witness catastrophe in progress.
