Background

Pursuers were a diverse caste bred for pursuit, interception, and the destruction of highly mobile enemies. Their forms varied according to quarry and terrain. Some bloodlines were made for sustained chases across open country, others for explosive speed, climbing, difficult ground, or prey strong enough to turn and fight. Limbs, feet, and killing appendages could differ greatly, but the same economy of form remained: lean bodies, tremendous driving strength, and little anatomy wasted on anything unrelated to the chase.

Speed was only part of their purpose. Pursuers could change direction violently, cross ground that would break another creature's pace, and continue long after most prey had begun to tire. They were used to overtake scouts, cut off withdrawals, run down raiders, and deny swift enemies the freedom to decide when an engagement ended. Once committed to a target, terrain merely altered the path of pursuit and distance became another resource to consume. A caravan guard's account describes one drawing riders away from the wagons, killing two, then racing back past the survivors to attack the pack animals.
