Background

The mortal followers of the Tormentor Cults form the foundation of every congregation, sect and revelation. Drawn from all walks of life, they are united by a shared search for meaning in a harsh and unforgiving world. Grief, injustice, despair, guilt and loss have led them to believe that suffering conceals truths hidden from ordinary minds.

Cult adherents gather in secret cells or larger congregations, depending upon the ambitions of their leaders. Many maintain ordinary lives as labourers, merchants, priests, scholars or officials, concealing their faith behind the routines of everyday society. Beneath this façade, they share revelations, interpret visions, recruit new followers and perform the rites that sustain their beliefs.

Their influence spreads quietly. Strange symbols appear in forgotten places, unsettling rumours circulate and shared dreams trouble entire communities. In cities they infiltrate institutions and recruit the vulnerable, whilst in remote regions they gather in hidden shrines and forgotten ruins. Wherever suffering takes root, the Tormentor Cults are rarely far behind.
