Tepozotli, Matron of the Mirewoods | The Lost Continent

LORE & BACKGROUND

Tepozotli is the Matron of the Mirewoods and the focus of the Anurans’ devotion. She is an enormous, six-legged toad creature with a pronounced nose-like structure, a multitude of eyes, and a giant maw lined with disturbingly humanoid teeth. She swallows prey whole, and even hardy materials do not reliably resist what follows for long.

She is typically encountered enthroned in a shallow clearing in the mangrove, surrounded by stone idols in her likeness. These effigies repeat the same features with obsessive consistency, exaggerating the nose-form, the maw, and the eyes defining her image.

Tadpoles are spawned from her back in great numbers, and these young, if they survive, harden into the Anurans that range the Mirewoods on her behalf. The tribe’s hunting, migrations, rites, and stonework all serve a single purpose. That she is fed and that she is worshipped.
