Expedition Cartographer with Donkey | Penitent Crusade

LORE & BACKGROUND

The Expedition Cartographer is trained in navigation and surveying, recording routes and landmarks so expeditions can retrace their steps and report what they found with some accuracy. Cartographers work with field scrolls and delicate tools, including compasses, measuring cord, chalk, and marking stakes. Among their most valuable instruments is a large long glass used to take distant sights and fix positions.

Because the long glass is too heavy and awkward to carry by hand through the jungle, it is transported on a donkey along with tripod legs and straps needed to keep it secured. In field reports, the long glass rides on the donkey or it does not go.

A cartographer is critical to any expedition, but rarely welcomed by the soldiery. The combination of crippling curiosity, irreplaceability, and extra-judicial authority is a recipe for misfortune, and more often a grisly end for the warriors assigned to guard them. Failed excursions have been launched in pursuit of vantage points or intriguing landmarks, costing dearly those tasked with protection.
