Acarid Broodmare | Church of the Acarid

LORE & BACKGROUND

Deep in the earth beneath the church squats the Broodmare, a grotesque matriarch whose form is a blasphemy of flesh. Her swollen body sits underground, a twisted caricature of the saint once worshipped above. Limbs placed upon folds of meat and carapace, while her parasite head rises crowned in feeder tendrils. She is the sole source of the brood’s eggs, each armored shell heavy with nutrients and already bearing the instincts of the hunter within.

When the monks first broke open her chamber, they found her enthroned in the body of a long-forgotten host, already transformed into this amalgam of alien parasite and mortal shape. That host’s name is lost, but its body has become the eternal cradle for the hive. The Broodmare does not hunt or wander. Her guardians drag prey to her, tendrils working rhythmically as she devours and swells with the next clutch. Infested hosts carry her eggs into alcoves and shrines, ensuring her survival beyond the catacombs. In her, the infestation has a queen, a corrupted echo of the saint the pilgrims once venerated. Her throne is the hive’s heart, and all else in the church moves according to her will.
