BACKGROUND

Among the most ancient servants of the Church are those known simply as the Elders. These venerable priests have devoted decades to the Creed and the work of the Church, and some are rumoured to have lived unnaturally long lives. Their devotion has marked more than their spirits.

Age has not diminished them as it does ordinary men. Their bodies have grown heavy and strange, backs bowed beneath swollen flesh and limbs possessed of strength at odds with their years. Some are so transformed that little of their former humanity remains visible beneath their robes. They move slowly and with inexorable purpose, like living monuments to the Faith.

The Church offers few explanations for these transformations. To the faithful, the Elders are proof that a lifetime of service can shape a person beyond mortal understanding.

They speak rarely and require little, passing their years within monasteries and sacred precincts, attended by younger priests with reverence. Yet when called to serve, they do so still. Ancient hands lift burdens that would stagger several men, and bodies long expected to fail continue their work with tireless resolve.
