BACKGROUND

Relics occupy a special place in the religious life of the Azerai Empire. The Church carefully preserves the remains and possessions of its most revered saints, sealing fragments of bone, withered heads, teeth, scraps of clothing and other remnants in elaborate reliquaries made of iron, stone and precious metal.

These objects become centres of devotion. Pilgrims travel from distant communities to honour them, and offerings gather around the shrines where they are kept. A guild may preserve the finger-bone of its patron within a workshop, a farming settlement may carry a saint's reliquary in procession, and a monastery may owe much of its prestige to a celebrated fragment in its possession.

The Church recognises hundreds of saints, each associated with particular virtues, occupations or deeds. Local devotion can be deeply attached to a specific relic, even where its importance is barely known beyond the community.

From grand reliquaries to the humblest devotional objects, these material traces of the faith make the Church present in the lives of its worshippers.
