BACKGROUND

Across Doaden, justice is often measured not by law, but by fear. Gibbet cages hang from ruined gates, roadside posts, township walls and the blackened boughs of dead trees, each one bearing its lesson in silence.

In harsher places, these cages are not merely left to the wind. Fires are kindled beneath them when rulers, cults or desperate mobs seek to make suffering into a sermon. The condemned are raised above the flames, their punishment made visible to all who pass nearby.
