BACKGROUND

The marks of the Azerai faith are found throughout the Empire. The Hierogram is carved above doorways and into foundation stones, while statues watch over public squares, shrines and places of worship. Even the poorest communities keep some token of devotion, and the grand cathedrals accumulate centuries of offerings and memorials.

Foremost among the Church's sacred symbols is the Azerian Hierogram. Its elongated rays represent mankind's ascent from the failures of the past towards a brighter future. The sign appears on everything from simple devotional tokens to the banners of the Penitent Crusade, reminding the faithful of the shared work demanded by the Creed.

Images of Azerai, the First Saint, stand alongside those of innumerable other saints, whose professions, virtues and deeds are honoured throughout the Empire. Their patronages are often intensely local, tied to the needs of individual communities, guilds and trades.

Through such imagery, the Church gives visible form to its teachings, placing the symbols of worship throughout ordinary life.
