BACKGROUND

Song is woven deeply into worship of Azerai. From village chapels to the great cathedral districts, the faithful raise their voices in hymns affirming the Creed and the common purpose that binds mankind.

The Church maintains choirs of monks and nuns trained in innumerable hymns, litanies and ritual responses. Some serve permanently in monasteries and cathedrals, accompanying daily observances and great ceremonies. Others travel with preachers, pilgrims and religious processions, carrying familiar words and melodies between distant communities.

To sing in chorus holds particular significance within the Creed. A single voice becomes part of something greater, each singer contributing without overwhelming the whole. For priests, the choir expresses mankind's shared endeavour; for worshippers, its familiar refrains unite communities separated by hundreds of miles.

Local traditions differ, yet many hymns have endured for generations, passed from congregation to congregation even where written scripture is scarce. Through these songs, the Church preserves and teaches its faith.
