LORE & BACKGROUND

Bartev is a veteran mercenary of the Empire’s minor conflicts, a man who fought for coin and obligation through border wars that flared and faded without glory. Age and ale have thickened him, yet he carries the pride of hard service. His posture stays straight, his movements economical, and his eyes keep measuring distance and threat.

When he had finally earned enough, he invested his pay in an independent caravan. He wanted no binding contract with a great mercantile house, and no more forgotten wars for petty lords. His savings bought a single cart, a strong horse, and a modest route he believed he could manage alone.

He is not reckless. He avoids known danger and prefers established roads over shortcuts. He hires no permanent guards, trusting instead in experience, caution, and a battered suit of chainmail hidden beneath his merchant’s cloak. He carries a sword more from habit than hope, aware that many threats on the road cannot be met blade to blade.

Those who travel with him find him gruff but fair. He shares rations, insists on watches, and speaks little of his past unless pressed. He believes in earned coin and honest exchange, even if the Empire has taken more than it gave. In Doaden, such faith is often misplaced, and the road rarely forgives.
