Across the northern settlements, the Winter Debt is woven into the ordinary customs that help communities survive the hardest months. Hearths remain burning through the night, and a portion of a household's food and drink is set aside before anyone eats. Offerings are prepared alongside communal meals, while gifts to unseen recipients sit beside gifts exchanged between neighbours.

The same gatherings also serve a practical purpose. Sharing grain, firewood, food and drink while stores are plentiful makes it more likely that help will be returned when another household begins to run short. For villagers, these habits of mutual survival and the older rites of the Debt have been handed down together for generations.

This banquet terrain represents that shared midwinter setting: food gathered before the worst cold closes the roads, fellowship around the hearth and the uneasy custom of leaving something untouched for whatever may be listening beyond the light.

The Winter Debt survives partly because these practical habits and supernatural precautions are difficult to separate. A shared supper may be neighbourly generosity, inherited ritual or both, and an empty place may honour the dead or leave room for something else.
