BACKGROUND

Across the Empire, the Priesthood carries the Azerai Creed into settlements, monasteries and cathedral districts, and its Bishops hold authority over both the Church's spiritual affairs and its worldly obligations. Even powerful secular rulers are expected to heed their counsel.

A Bishop does more than lead worship. Tithes, petitions, reports and correspondence from lesser clergy pass beneath their oversight, allowing them to follow the communities entrusted to them. They settle disputes of doctrine, appoint and discipline priests, arbitrate between Church and local government, and ensure that the obligations of the faithful are met.

The office takes many forms. Some Bishops are austere theologians, others gifted administrators, charismatic preachers or unabashed political creatures. Many spend decades cultivating ties with guilds, councils and noble houses.

Whatever their character, each Bishop speaks with the considerable weight of the Church behind them. A sermon may guide thousands of worshippers, while a letter under their seal can carry consequences far beyond the cathedral walls.
