LORE & BACKGROUND

Anuran craftsmanship is primitive in material and technique, and broadly utilitarian when it comes to their tools and equipment. Their stonework is where this becomes unmistakable. Around their grounds and along approach routes, they raise idols and totems depicting their Matron in exaggerated shapes. The nose-form is lengthened beyond proportion. The maw is carved as a simple, absolute shape. The eyes multiply. The same features recur with obsessive consistency, as if correctness matters more than skill.

Some of these stones are worn and damaged, half-sunk into the mud, suggesting the Anurans have inhabited these flooded forests for a very long time.

At the heart of their grounds stands a larger, assembled totem made from multiple pieces, dragged into place and rebuilt when they relocate. It serves as the focal point for their nightly croaking rituals, with the tribe gathering around it. Lesser effigies are planted in a loose ring beyond, and the whole structure is treated with unusual care, suggesting religious or arcane significance beyond simple devotion.
