BACKGROUND

To the folk of the Azerai Empire, no light shines brighter than that of Azerai, though much of Doaden is ruled by lesser lights. A candle upon a sill, a taper beside a corpse, a wavering flame in the hands of a penitent, each holds back the dark by the breadth of a breath.

In the townships, candles are spent with care, for wax and tallow are not always easily spared. Yet no shrine, sickroom, oath-taking, or midnight labour is truly complete without them. Set in brass, bone, iron, or whatever else can be made to stand upright, these small flames mark the places where work continues, prayers are whispered, and fearful things are watched until dawn.
