The Prison City

Dreadwatch was once one of the great works of the Azerai Empire: an immense prison-fortress built to contain those the Church deemed too dangerous, troublesome or valuable to release.

Behind its walls stood entire districts of workshops, foundries, chapels and cell blocks. Thousands lived and laboured within its confines, and generations were born into captivity without ever seeing the world beyond its walls.

Then, without warning, Dreadwatch fell.

Whatever happened has long since been erased from Imperial history. Revolt, plague, forbidden rites and the escape of something terrible from the Lower Vaults are all whispered as explanations. None have ever been proven.

The Prison Still Holds

Centuries later, the ruins endure.

The Penitent Crusade once again flies its banners above a reclaimed bastion. Tormentor Cults make dread pilgrimages to places marked by centuries of suffering. Anatomists pursue their grisly work beneath abandoned infirmaries, while brigands, scavengers and treasure hunters fight over whatever corners of the prison they can hold. Beyond them lie territories claimed by beasts, monstrosities and stranger things still.

No single power rules Dreadwatch, it is law unto itself. Its territories constantly shift, familiar paths become deathtraps and even a successful expedition may discover that the way home has closed behind them.

Though the prison fell centuries ago, it remains remarkably adept at keeping people inside.
