Hey Gang,
It’s time to leave the “safety” of Penitent’s Landing behind and wade a little deeper into the Lost Continent’s soggier corners - the Azerai Expedition has pushed into the Mirewoods, a stretch of parasite-infested mangroves where the roots grow like webs, the waters hide all manner of unpleasant surprises, and the nights are filled with a chorus of deep croaking that no one has found especially relaxing...
What could possibly be making that noise?
Well, nothing charming unfortunately - this month we’re introducing the Anurans, a tribe of monstrous toadfolk lurking in the swamp’s black waters, along with the foul little ecosystem that seems determined to make sure no expedition gets through with its sanity intact.
The first of these creatures are the hulking Anuran Warriors, thick-bodied swamp brutes shaped by the Mirewoods’ wet, oppressive misery. Built to hold ground in the blackwater and roots, these (poorly) masked toadfolk look right at home dragging prey into the mud and turning any attempted crossing into a very bad idea.
Alongside them comes the Anuran Shaman, ritual leader of the tribe and conductor of those delightful nocturnal croaking sessions echoing through the mangroves. Surrounded by ominous purpose and all manner of slick amphibian unpleasantness, the Shaman adds some ceremony and magic to the faction.
And what would a swamp-bound nightmare tribe be without some truly hideous offspring? Enter the Anuran Tadpoles, squirming little horrors that add an extra layer of discomfort to the whole affair and strongly suggest that the local wildlife would have been better off left undiscovered.
There’s plenty more to come from this set, including unsettling Mirewoods stonework featuring grotesque idols, more Anurans to stalk your expedition and an imposing, horrifying Matron with just a dash of added trypophobia for good measure.
Also keep an eye out for the expanded Lost Continent faction book, which will provide you with all sorts of tools and helpful resources for building your own swamp-ridden journeys, desperate expeditions, and deeply ill-advised encounters in the Mirewoods.
We’re looking forward to sharing the full reveal with you all later this month - the Anurans are another step deeper into the Lost Continent’s strange and hostile wilds and we’re excited to delve even deeper into what else might be uncovered beyond the trees.
Cheers,
The Bestiarum Crew
